Never Forget...10 Years At War

Unlike many Americans, 9/11’s impact, with resulting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has radically reshaped soldiers’ lives. They’ve wrestled with repeated, yearlong deployments that have made family separations, casualties and lasting trauma daily parts of life.

For troops on duty during the events of Sept. 11, 2001, it didn't take long to realize that life as they know it was about to change.

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, his son has been on five tours, some spanning six to 18 months in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Bosnia.

Ten years and five deployments later, Fisher says war is simply a part of their family life.

9/11 became the day in our lives when our futures changed, when the uniform hanging in the closet meant more than one weekend a month and two weeks in the summer.

For these military children, three faces among thousands like them, the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington changed their home lives, their daily routines and their paths growing up over the following decade.

He’s part of a generation of military kids for whom wartime isn't the new normal. It’s just normal. It’s what they’ve grown up with. And the sacrifices they’ve had to make since Sept. 11 are just as sobering as those of their parents.
